Biography

Annie Sprinkle biography

Annie Sprinkle is an artist, filmmaker and author who previously worked as an adult-film performer and sex worker. Her career connects that experience with performance art, public education and advocacy for sex workers’ rights. Her collaboration with Beth Stephens developed into environmental art, public rituals and projects presented at documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel.

The documenta biography places Sprinkle’s adult-performance work and rights advocacy in the 1970s. In an interview originally published by Blikk in 2002, she described sharing her experiences through workshops, books, theatre, films and photography. Her stage presentation Herstory of Porn used her own career as the material for a performance and film diary.

Sprinkle and Stephens began working as an art duo in the early 2000s. Their collaboration brought together performance, ecological concerns and forms of public participation. A seven-year project of public wedding rituals began in 2005, followed by works that documenta 14 presented in museums, streets and an archival installation in 2017.
