A 2023 scholarly history of his career traces an early period as a drummer and musician before modeling work led him into adult production around 1979–1980. The Guardian later described him as one of Britain's most successful adult-film makers and highlighted his reality-based, character-led style.
The Ben Dover series received AVN's 1997 Breakthrough Award. Dover later won major gonzo-video honors and entered the AVN Hall of Fame in 2011.
