The company built the long-running Homegrown Video series around tapes submitted by ordinary couples and helped establish a commercial market for amateur material during the VHS era. Its first title has repeatedly been cited as influential in the development of the amateur-video genre.
Farrell Timlake, also known as Tim Lake, purchased the company from Swaim in 1993 and expanded its distribution. Later legal records tied the HOMEGROWN VIDEO mark and domain operation to successor business entities, but the original operating company is now best treated as a legacy business.
